The Coffeehouse Film Series is presented by the Friends of the Duncan Library and FireFlies Restaurant & Coffee Bar. This unique series features new, unreleased (or limited release) award-winning indie and international films all in the casual comfort of cool Alexandria coffeehouses and bistros.

The films (on DVD) are supplied as part of a series by Film Movement (www.filmmovement.com). Film Movement is a distributor of award-winning independent and foreign films. Their mission is to bring “small but deserving films” that get squeezed out of theaters by Hollywood blockbusters directly to film fans. One of the ways they accomplish this goal is by providing films on DVD as a subscription service to libraries. Libraries are allowed on public screening and then the DVD becomes part of the library’s collection. The films are selected by a group of curators that include Patricia Finneran of the AFI’s Silverdocs Film Festival, Matt Dentler from the South By Southwest Festival and others from such places as the Miami International Film Festival, the New York Women’s Film Festival, Roger Ebert’s Overlooked Film Festival and the The Film Society of Lincoln Center.

April Feature
The surprise guest at a New Jersey family graduation party sparks long-buried recriminations in the new prize-winning American independent film “August the First.”

Film Synopsis
It is the morning of Tunde’s graduation party and things have already begun to unravel. Tunde has managed to alienate his sister, Simisola. His older brother, Ade, persistently plagues him with criticism, and their mother has started drinking again. Unbeknownst to most, Tunde has orchestrated the return of his long estranged father, resurrecting unresolved family anguish against the backdrop of Tunde’s celebration.

As the day turns to night, old wounds are re-opened and bad habits are revived. Layer by layer, deception and half-truths are peeled away as secrets are uncovered in what will be become the most unforgettable day the family has ever experienced.
