Governor Tim Kaine today endorsed the recommendations of The Governor’s Taskforce for Career Pathways System Development. During the last six months, the Taskforce has developed a blueprint to ensure that Virginia maintains its competitive edge in the global economy by making investments in educating and training the current and future workforce. Virginia is now set to adopt the nation’s first statewide initiative streamlining current workforce development policies and programs. The initiative will create a 21st century framework that positions Virginia’s workforce to meet the pressures of international competition and rapid technological change.

Governor Tim Kaine today kicked off his Renew Virginia initiative, which will include legislative and executive actions to make Virginia a leader in energy conservation and efficiency and protecting the environment. The Governor met with his economic development team and energy-related business owners at the Greater Richmond Convention Center to discuss strategies for attracting renewable energy companies to the Commonwealth, and unveiled plans to form an interagency task force and create an energy marketing plan to attract green jobs to the Commonwealth.

Governor Tim Kaine and First Lady Anne Holton today praised the positive results of the work by the Council on Reform (CORE) to improve the rate of permanent placement for foster children in Virginia. It has been one year since Governor Kaine began an intensive effort to improve the delivery of child welfare and mental health services to the youth and families of Virginia. Part of this effort was a challenge to both public and private agencies to build on the momentum of First Lady Anne Holton’s For Keeps initiative, and work together to find more permanent, family connections for children in foster care.

Governor Tim Kaine today announced that J. Braxton Powell will retire from the position of State Treasurer of Virginia on Dec. 31. The Governor also announced the appointment of Manju Ganeriwala as Treasurer effective Jan. 1, 2009.

Governor Tim Kaine and Attorney General Bob McDonnell announced their support today for the distribution of 80,000 Medicare Protection booklets to older adults and caregivers throughout the Commonwealth. The toolkits are a joint effort of the Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging Senior Medicare Patrol Program (SMP), the Virginia Department for the Aging and Virginia Bureau of Insurance with support by Virginia TRIAD, SeniorNavigator and AARP Virginia.
