Toasting To Twenty Years: SCAN Of Northern Virginia Celebrates Anniversary With Record-Breaking Fundraiser In Old Town

Last Saturday evening, in the beautiful setting of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) of Northern Virginia hosted its 6th annual Toast to Hope. More than 260 guests attended, enjoying wine tastings from local vintners and gourmet food from local restuarants and caterers.

A nostalgic birthday party theme allowed guests to enjoy fun games, sample amazing “birthday” cupcakes and cakes, and purchase commemorative statues in honor of SCAN’s anniversary.

Senator-Elect Mark Warner Appoints Veteran Senate Aide As Chief Of Staff

U.S. Senator-elect Mark R. Warner (D-VA) today announced the appointment of Senate staff veteran Luke Albee to serve as his chief of staff.

Albee served 20 years as a Senate aide – the last eleven as chief of staff to Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, chairman of the Judiciary Committee and one of the Senate’s most senior members. In 2005, Albee left Capitol Hill to join the political consulting firm Ricchetti, Inc.

Radiation Detected In Trash Truck

At approximately 11:44 a.m Saturday Nov. 15, 2008, Alexandria Fire and EMS units responded to 5301 Eisenhower Avenue (Covanta Energy) for a report of radiation coming from a trash truck. Upon arrival of the Hazardous Material Team it was confirmed that radiation was coming from the rear compartment of the trash truck.

Fire In House Under Construction

At approximately 5:41 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, Alexandria Fire and EMS units responded to a report of fire in a house under construction at 1210 North Pegram Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel observed fire on the first floor of a three-story single family house. The single family house was in the final stage of construction and was
framed and under roof.

Silver Eagles For The Alexandria Undersheriff, U.S. Army Brigadier General And General George S. Patton

David M. Rocco, a 29-year veteran of the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office was promoted to Undersheriff by Sheriff Dana Lawhorne in 2007. Undersheriff Rocco, second in command of the Sheriff’s Office, first joined the Sheriff’s Office in December 1979 as a deputy sheriff, promoted to Sergeant in 1981, Lieutenant in 1982, and Captain in 1985. During his tenure as Captain, he commanded all divisions within the Office including: Administrative, Security, Support Services, and Judicial and Special Operations.

Alexandria Fire Department Introduces Cross Fit

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, the Alexandria Fire Department will be hosting a Field Day to demonstrate Cross Fit, the strength and conditioning program recently adopted by the department. Firefighters, paramedics and other department employees will demonstrate the new work-out routines they are using to meet the challenging physical demands of their jobs. While physical fitness and training have long been a part of their daily routines, this year, Alexandria’s first responders are introducing Cross Fit, a program being utilized by the U.S. military as well as police and fire departments across the country. The departments Cross Fit program is funded through a grant from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs and will be the first such program offered in the region.

Alexandria Inmates Earn G.E.D. Certificates

Hundreds Volunteer For Public Health Emergency Drill
