Tutoring Consortium Needs Volunteers

The Alexandria Tutoring Consortium needs your help! If you love children and reading, apply to tutor an Alexandria City Public School first- or second-grader in reading.

ATC is an independent organization that is a partnership with the Alexandria faith community, the city and the public schools. Currently, ATC has almost 100 people who volunteer weekly with at-risk first- and second-graders in our public schools to ensure that these students can read at or above grade level by the end of second grade. Numerous studies have shown when students fall behind in reading in the first and second grade, it is very difficult to catch up, and these students tend to drop out of school prior to graduation. During the 2007-08 school year, 83% of students who were borderline and 58% of those who failed the fall reading test passed in the spring, because of ATC tutors.

To volunteer, apply online at www.alexandriatutors.org.
