Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Math Curriculum Specialist Susan Birnie is the newly elected director of the Southern Region of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM), an international organization of leaders collaborating to achieve excellence and equity in mathematics education at all levels. Birnie has been an NCSM member since 1994.
Birnie, who has worked for ACPS for 21 years and taught for 34 years, is a frequent presenter of professional development such as Lenses on Learning for elementary principals and the 1999 TIMSS Video Study for secondary teachers and administrators. She is a past president of the Virginia Council for Mathematics Supervision and past board member of the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Since 1988, she has been involved with projects supporting math specialists as change agents at the elementary level. She was a member of the Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition Committee that initiated the proposal for the Virginia Mathematics Specialist endorsement for teachers of grades kindergarten through eight.
Birnie also is a member of Phi Delta Kappa and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. She is an adjunct professor at the University of Virginia’s Northern Virginia campus. Birnie’s honors include Virginia finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching, Teacher of the Year by the American Association of University Women/Alexandria Branch and the Excellence in Teaching Award, Alexandria City Public Schools.
Birnie will preside over a region that includes Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Bermuda, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Her duties include representing the region at all Board meetings, organizing conference events, planning meetings, promoting membership, preparing reports of regional activities, writing articles for NCSM publications and assisting in planning the annual conference, among other tasks.
Her term of office is three years.
