Alexandria, VA – Sunday, February 10, 2008. Andrew Rodriguez, who led Bishop Ireton to the 2007 Virginia Independent School Football Association Championship Game, announced that he will attend the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. Rodriguez, son of Major General David and Virginia Rodriguez, was a four year starter for the Cardinals, three time first team all state linebacker, two year captain, first team All Area (D.C. Examiner) and second team All Met (Washington Post). He was recently selected by the Fairfax Co. Football Hall of Fame as the Private School Player of the Year and nominated for the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Awards. Rodriguez is a member of Bishop Ireton’s DeSales Chapter of the National Honor Society, maintaining a grade point average of 4.3.
The Cardinals relied on Rodriguez to makes plays on both sides of the ball along their way to a school-best 9 – 3 season. His performance in the VISFA Semi-Final playoff victory over Flint Hill was indicative of his consistently outstanding productivity. Rodriguez led Bishop Ireton on the season in tackles, touchdowns, receptions, and receiving yards and was second in rushing yards, interceptions, and passes broken up.
Andrew Rodriguez will join his cousin Brian McSween (BI ’05) and Edward Pitts (Bishop Ireton ’06) on Head Coach Stan Brock’s roster at Army. He follows in the footsteps of his father, who presently serves as Commander, 82 Airborne Division, and sister Amy (West Point ’06) as a cadet. Rodriguez’ brother David is a senior safety at Gettysburg College and his sister Melissa is a graduate student at Virginia Tech.
