Getting Exercise In With The Snow

December 20th, 2009 | [From: Chris]

So there is over a foot of snow on the ground and the YMCA is closed. How are you going to get any exercise? Don’t let the snow stop you. Shoveling snow is a great way to burn off calories, you just need to remember to do it correctly so you don’t hurt your back. Bend you knees and use your body to lift the snow.

Turkey And More

Over Thanksgiving I went to North Carolina, and, when I had the chance, took a swim at the YMCA in Raliegh. That sucker is huge. Not Raleigh, the YMCA. And why shouldn’t it be? The place is surrounded by football and baseball fields and a million acres of woods. Sometimes, while working out at the YMCA in Alexandria I relate to W. C. Fields, who said: “The room was so packed you couldn’t laugh ‘Ha, ha, ha.’ You had to laugh ‘Ho, ho, ho.”

Passing On A Love Of Exercise

December 6th, 2009 | [From: Chris]

Yesterday I participated in the Girls on the Run Reindeer Romp 5k in Reston. I was the buddy runner for a student from Maury Elementary School where I work. It was run to be a part of an event that is introducing a lot of girls to the love of running and exercise at an age when they are starting to find out who they are and they can be positively influenced by the adults in their lives.

A Thanksgiving Tradition

November 26th, 2009 | [From: Chris]

Today, in keeping with the family tradition, I ran the Turkey Trot 5 Miler with my daughters Katie and Rebecca. I have run the race almost every year since moving to Alexandria 16 years ago. For many of the years, the girls stood outside our house, which is at the one mile point in the race and cheered me on while my husband took photos.

A Class Of Our Own

November 16th, 2009 | [From: Carla]

Last week, James Cullum and I got a taste of what a water aerobics class entails when Ellen Jones, the aquatics supervisor at the Alexandria YMCA, designed a class just for us. First, we got in the water and stretched our muscles by treading water and doing some basic exercises. Then, we put on our flotation belts and our water shoes.

Surprise Win At Race For Research

November 15th, 2009 | [From: Chris]

Today I ran in the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) 5k race that was held in Alexandria. I had been invited to run by Debbie Wells who’s husband has been diagnosed with this disease. Debbie’s team raised the most money for this event, and seemed to bring out the most participants. The race began in […]

Exercising In All Kinds Of Weather

November 8th, 2009 | [From: Chris]

This time of the year the temperature is all over the place, so I thought I would write a bit about exercising and the weather. If you have run very much, you will know that running generates quite a bit of heat and you should dress accordingly. If you are comfortable when you start, you will probably get to warm in a mile or two. As I have been running for many years, I know what I should wear at certain temperatures for my own comfort. If you don’t know, you can write down what you wore for your runs and what the temperature was to start a log that you can refer to in the future.

Trip To Harrisonburg And Workouts

November 3rd, 2009 | [From: Chris]

Last Friday, my daughter and I drove to Harrisonburg to visit JMU. Before we left, I went to the YMCA to do a weight workout and use the elliptical machine. When traveling, it isn’t hard to work out, but it isn’t always possible to do weights, so I wanted to get them in before we left.

San Antonio YMCA

November 3rd, 2009 | [From: James]

The YMCA in downtown San Antonio sucks. I tried it out last week. The building is a former Albertson’s grocery store – so, when you close your eyes you can imagine the place as it used to be, with unhelpful teenage employees in blue vests clumsily bagging your groceries. After the store closed a few years ago, the beige eyesore became a church. We called it the “Metho-dome”.

Travel and Exercise

October 29th, 2009 | [From: Chris]

Tomorrow I will be traveling to James Madison University with my daugther for a college visit. When I travel I try to figure out possible workouts in advance so I can pack what I need. I will be taking clothes for two running workout, extra shorts and a bathnig suit as the hotel has an indoor pool and work out room.
