Cap Medical Malpractice Cost

[From: Letters/Opinions]

Despite the recent vote of the Senate Finance Committee to approve its Health Care Reform bill, the discussion continues to be superficial and emotional, especially since the audit company’s money complaint.

Reduced medical malpractice–not electronic records or money matters–will make a real difference in quality of health care–the ignored topic.

Addressing Violence At George Washington Middle School

[From: Letters/Opinions]

We were very pleased to read about the recent visit to Chicago by Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Attorney General Eric Holder at the behest of President Obama. They pledged to initiate a “sustained national effort” to address the issue of student violence after the beating death of 16-year old Chicago student.

City As Landlord?

[From: Letters/Opinions]

As someone who spent most of my two years on the City Council grappling with two of the most challenging budgets in our history, I was extremely interested to see Councilman Fannon’s proposal to handle some of our financial challenges by leasing City properties that are currently underutilized. Our challenges are so great that we have to welcome any and all suggestions to the discussion.

[From: Letters/Opinions, Schools]

The School Board heard your voices last week at the public hearing we conducted as part of our September 24 Board meeting. It is critically important to us as elected officials to keep the lines of communication open and hear your concerns about our school system.

[From: Health, Letters/Opinions]

Football, Halloween and falling leaves are what Alexandrians expect in the fall. However, this season we will also have an unwelcome visitor””the H1N1 influenza virus. However, I want to assure you that the City is prepared to handle this health emergency.

Moran Votes To Keep ACORN In Clover

[From: Letters/Opinions]

This shouldn’t be news, because it comes as no surprise, yet it must be reported that US Representative Jim Moran (VA-8th), in his usual lack of brain power, voted NOT to de-fund ACORN. Oh, and as an aside, US Representative Gerry Connolly (VA-11th) opted to not even cast a vote on this important issue of corrupt and illegal behavior from an organization receiving millions of taxpayer dollars.

Remember the Fallen, Forget the Politics

[From: Letters/Opinions]

For my grandparents it was December 7, 1941. For my parents it was November 22, 1963 and July 20, 1969. For us it will always be September 11, 2001.

Dates that define a generation.

AAA Questions Arlington HOT Lane Lawsuit

[From: Letters/Opinions]

Arlington’s filing of a federal lawsuit to block the I-395/I-95 HOT lanes project is disappointing, damaging and hypocritical. Disappointing because Virginia officials had already announced a delay to address local concerns and funding issues. Yet, Arlington County has proceeded to file a federal lawsuit to block the project. Damaging because private money is the only money available for major new projects in Virginia currently. Private investment is funding projects like the HOT project on the Capital Beltway currently under way and would also fund the I-395/95 project.

The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum Of The Parts

[From: Letters/Opinions]

The entirety of his career is how retired Alexandria Chief of Police David Baker should be measured and remembered. Over his nearly 40 years of public service, his record had been unblemished, and for those of us who know him, on or off the cop beat, know a great man full of integrity and dedication.

With Thanks & Appreciation Those of us that have been lucky enough to have worked with Police Chief David Baker know that he is one of the finest human beings on earth.  We are heartbroken that the City will be losing one of its most dedicated and caring employees, and we want him to know [...]
