A suspect remains barricaded inside a Cameron Station home after allegedly shooting a woman several times in what police are describing as a domestic dispute. The shooting took place at around 11 a.m. in the garage of a townhouse on Waple Lane near Duke Street.

The incident occurred “While she was attempting to leave the house. She was able to put the car in reverse and backed it up and then collapsed on the street… By all accounts it appears to be domestically related,” said Alexandria Police Chief David Baker, adding that the suspect eventually released a two-year-old child from the home.

Police transported the victim to a nearby hospital. Her condition is serious, but stable.

In the two hours since the incident occurred, the suspect has revealed himself to authorities once, when he walked out on the balcony of the home brandishing a handgun.

Baker said police have contacted the suspect.

Police used the Emergency Notification System to contact nearby neighbors. As of noon, nearby Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School was no longer in lockdown. “Police told us we didn’t have to be listed for lockdown since they have the situation contained at the other end” of Cameron Station, said a staff member at Tucker. The school locked its doors at approximately 11:15 a.m., the staffer said.

Baker said police were alerted to the incident by a passerby walking a dog who called police to report suspected shots fired.

“We want everyone to know that the situation is contained in a very small geographic area and, as far as we know, because it is the middle of the day and people are at work, no one has had to leave their home,” Baker said.

Update: 4:30 p.m
Some students from T.C. Williams High School, Minnie Howard 9th Grade Center and Francis Hammond Middle School will not be able to get home immediately after school today. Also, some Cameron Station residents will not to able to get into their homes until the police activity is resolved.

The Alexandria Police Department is directing students and residents who need assistance to a family reunification center in the gymnasium at Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School, located at 435 Ferdinand Day Drive.
