A Thanksgiving Tradition

Today, in keeping with the family tradition, I ran the Turkey Trot 5 Miler with my daughters Katie and Rebecca. I have run the race almost every year since moving to Alexandria 16 years ago. For many of the years, the girls stood outside our house, which is at the one mile point in the race and cheered me on while my husband took photos. Once they started running cross country for T.C. Williams, they joined me. It is a great start to the holiday and makes us feel less guilty about eating extra stuffing and pie.

I ran faster than I thought I would. My time was 37:55, or 7:35 per mile and I placed third in the 50-59 year old women category. I hope everyone gets out today at least for a walk. Maybe next year you can make exercise a part of your Thanksgiving tradition.

This week’s workouts:

Monday: I ran to the track at TC and did several laps at 7:40 pace to see how that would feel in the race. Total–5 miles

Tuesday: Spinning class at the YMCA for an hour.

Wednesday: I only ran two miles to warm up my legs and do some stretching. Resting for the race.

Thursday: Race day. I warmed up two miles, ran the race, cooled down and jogged home. Total-8 miles
