Heritage Night Tonight

The staff, students and families of Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School are celebrating the many cultures that make up the school community during their 10th Annual Heritage Night this evening.  Beginning with a parade of nations at 6:30 p.m., students will celebrate their family heritages by wearing native clothing and greeting the audience in many languages. Lyles Crouch Award

Forty-five participants in the Character Education Partnership’s National Forum on Character Education visited Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy today to tour the school, which will receive a National Schools of Character Finalist Award during the forum on Friday, Oct. 30. Guest speakers at the the school’s event included Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Morton Sherman and City of Alexandria Mayor William Euille. Shoe Collection

Francis C. Hammond Middle School students are participating in a shoe collection community service project through Nov. 10. Sole4Souls Incorporated will collect worn footwear to help provide assistance to people in need, whether they are victims of natural disaster or subject to living in extreme poverty. The charity can use each and every pair to make a tangible difference in someone’s life. Estimates indicate that Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unused shoes lying in their closets. America Recyles

The City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is seeking residents’, students’ and employees’ stories, ideas and tips on reducing, reusing and recycling plastic bags. Please submit your ideas no later than Saturday, Oct. 31, to stacy.herring@alexandriava.gov along with your name, address, telephone number and entry category (student, resident or employee. In November, judges will pick up to three best entries from each category, each of whom will win a reusable bag (made from recycled materials) full of prizes!
