This week, the T. C. Williams High School volleyball and cross country teams concluded tournament play and the football team took one step closer to participating in the regional playoffs for the first time since 1995.
Crosscountry
The T.C. Williams cross country team was at Burke Lake this Thursday to compete at the Virginia AAA Northern Regional Championship. Sophomore Shannon Smythe ran a personal best of 18:28 for 15th place in the girls race. This qualifies her to compete in the state championship to be held at Great Meadow Park in Warrington, VA on November 14th.
The girls varsity team placed 11th out of the 16 teams competing. Lake Braddock, West Springfield, West Potomac and Thomas Jefferson High Schools were the top 4 teams and move on to the state race. The first three teams are from the Patriot District.
Two Titan boys raced at Burke Lake after placing in the top 15 runners at the district level. Darren Foreman ran 16:20 for 42nd place in the region and Patrick Murphy was 62nd with a time of 16:42.
Volleyball
The Titans traveled to West Springfield to face the Spartans in the first round of the Patriot District Tournament on Monday night. Although T. C. played better than expected, they lost, 3-0: 25-14, 25-18 and 25-11. The Titans finish the year with a recored of 8-10.
There was some good news, though, as senior captain Miranda Branch was named to the Patriot District First team for the second straight year. Freshman Kate Whitmire received an honorable mention.
Football
Last Friday night, the Titans traveled to South County for a critical Patriot District game. T. C. won, 17-10, bringing their record to 5-4, which puts them at #8 in Northern Region standings.
Tomorrow, the Titans will host Robert E. Lee High School. Game time for this Patriot District contest is 1:30 p.m. If the Titans win, they will retain their #8 standing and move on to the Northern Region playoffs.
