Roadside Assistance Calls Continue To Mount As Motorists Return To Work And The Mall

As Of Noon Today Motor Club Has Responded  To Nearly 57 Thousands Calls For Help Since Friday

With 230,000 federal workers returning to work in the cold light of day for the first time in five days, plus another 200,000 motorists hitting the Capitol Beltway, and untold thousands of consumers who are finishing up that last-minute Christmas shopping, some folks are having a tough time with their cars and their commutes in the aftermath of the blizzard of 2009.

As a result, AAA Mid-Atlantic is still experiencing higher than average levels of emergency calls for roadside assistance from snowbound, stranded, and stalled motorists. Since the first flakes of snow began falling last Friday evening , the motor club has received more than 56,971 calls from motorists across the mid-Atlantic area.

In fact, as of noon today, the motor club had received 5,156 total calls – a 55% increase compared to a normal Tuesday and dispatched 4,032 calls.

Here’s the final report on the roadside assistance calls received today by AAA Mid-Atlantic across its territory.

  • As of 3:15 today – 8,184 calls.
  • Usually the entire 24-hr period for a Tuesday is 8,800.  Calls to AAA’s switchboard are running about 48% above normal and auto club is projected to receive 13,009 calls from distressed motorists today.

On Monday, AAA Mid-Atlantic received nearly 16,000 calls for service, beating the previous record of 14,000 calls, which was set in January 2005.  The auto club assisted nearly 12,000 motorists, topping by 20 % a record of 9,700 also set in January 2005.  That number is 126% higher than the Club’s winter average (December, January and February) of 5,138 calls.
